NIGHTLIFE.

Soi Buakhao is the long road running inland through central Pattaya, roughly parallel to and behind Second Road. It is not a nightlife strip in the Walking Street sense — it is a working street with nightlife all over it. Traffic on it, shops on it, food on it, and bars stacked down both sides and up every side soi it feeds.

It is the part of the city where residents, long-stayers and returning visitors actually drink. That is the whole character of the zone: nobody is performing for a coach party. Bars open earlier, close on their own schedule, and mostly compete on being pleasant rather than on being loud.

If Walking Street is the main stage, Soi Buakhao is the neighbourhood the cast lives in. My room here is Maju Bar, where I host Sunday Funday — a paid residency, stated plainly. Wider city context is on the Pattaya nightlife guide.

Every guide fudges this and then people arrive confused about which name refers to what. Here it is properly.

Soi Buakhao is the spine: a single long road. Everything else in this zone is described by its relationship to that road. Walk it end to end and you have seen the backbone of central Pattaya nightlife that is not on the seafront.

Soi LK Metro is a dense purpose-built nightlife block that runs off Soi Buakhao and connects through toward Second Road. It is compact and enclosed in feel — a short network of interlinked lanes packed tightly with bars, including a concentration of adult-entertainment venues alongside ordinary drinking bars. Because it is small and closed off from traffic in parts, it feels like an indoor space that happens to have sky above it. High density, quick to walk, easy to loop.

Tree Town is an entrance off Soi Buakhao into a pedestrian complex of bars, restaurants and live-music venues arranged around internal walkways rather than along a street. It reads as a compound: you go in, you circulate, you come out. More food and live music in the mix than LK Metro, and a broader crowd — couples, groups, families earlier in the evening.

The unnamed side sois are the rest of it, and collectively they are bigger than the named zones. Small lanes off Soi Buakhao holding a handful of bars each — pool tables, sport on screens, regulars, weekly tournaments, owner behind the bar. This is where the zone’s actual character lives and where almost no guide sends anybody.

The relationship in one line: Soi Buakhao is the road, LK Metro and Tree Town are two different self-contained clusters hanging off it, and the side sois are the connective tissue. All three plug into each other on foot, which is the practical point — you do not need transport to move between them.

Two genuinely different products. Choosing between them is the most useful decision a visitor makes.

The other structural difference is timing. Walking Street is a late format — it turns pedestrian in the early evening, fills through the evening and the clubs run late. Soi Buakhao is open and pleasant from late afternoon, which means you can genuinely start a night here at six and be somewhere good by seven. For anyone with a normal sleep pattern, that is a significant advantage.

Most well-built nights use both: start on Buakhao, move to the strip for the big room, and come back the other way for after hours or food. They are not rivals, they are different hours of the same night.

Maju Bar is a two-storey neon bar on Soi Buakhao with a guesthouse attached above it, and Sunday Funday is my hosted residency there. It has its own YouTube series, which is unusual for a bar this size and tells you something about how the room is run.

Two floors changes what a bar can be. Downstairs behaves like a Soi Buakhao bar — open to the street, easy to walk into, drink and watch the road. Upstairs is a different environment: lounge seating, hookah, a pool table, and the volume of a room you can actually talk in. Most bars in this zone give you one atmosphere. This one gives you two and lets you pick per hour.

Why Sunday works here. Sunday in Pattaya is a genuinely underrated slot. The weekend crowd is still in town but the pressure has come off, nobody is queuing for anything, and an afternoon-into-evening session is a real format rather than a consolation prize. It starts in daylight, builds through the evening and runs late, which means you can arrive at almost any hour and be arriving at the right time.

Why the guesthouse matters more than it sounds. Rooms above the bar means the transport problem disappears for anyone staying there. No ride home at 3AM, no fare negotiation, no working out where you are. For a group, being able to stay where you drink removes the single most common cause of a night ending badly. Ask the venue directly about rooms — I do not quote their rates.

Disclosure again: this is a paid residency. I am telling you Sunday at Maju is good because I think it is, and I am telling you I get paid to be there so you can weigh both.

The zone has three completely different personalities across a day and most visitors only ever see one of them.

Late afternoon

Quiet, hot, and surprisingly good. Bars are open with barely anybody in them, staff are relaxed, the light is going gold, and you can sit at an open-air bar on a busy road and watch central Pattaya go about its business. This is the most underrated hour in the entire city and it costs nothing to try. Bring sunglasses, sit on the shaded side, and do not plan anything.

Early evening

The zone’s best window. Bars fill with a mixed crowd, food is everywhere, live-music venues in Tree Town start up, and everything is comfortable rather than crowded. If you are eating and drinking in the same trip, do it now. Groups work well in this window because you can still get seven people around a table without booking anything.

Late

Buakhao does not shut when Walking Street peaks — it thins and then concentrates. Bars that were half full get busier as people cycle back from the strip, the side sois keep going with their regulars, and the character shifts from social to committed. It is quieter than the strip at the same hour but it is not over, and for a lot of people the last drink of the night is better here than in a superclub.

The practical read: use Buakhao for the first half of a night and the last quarter of it. Put the strip in the middle. That shape works almost every time.

The zone’s biggest practical advantage is that it is walkable in a way the seafront is not. LK Metro, Tree Town and the side sois all connect to the same spine, so a night here can be entirely on foot — no rides, no waiting, no fares.

Distances are short enough that walking between clusters is normal, long enough that walking the entire spine end to end in the heat is a task rather than a stroll. Pick a section and work it rather than trying to cover everything. The road is not a pleasant pedestrian environment in the way Walking Street is — there is traffic, the surface is uneven in places, and pavement comes and goes — so pay attention, especially after a few drinks and especially at night.

Getting to the zone from elsewhere: baht buses run the main roads and drop you within reach of the spine, and ride-hailing apps will take you to any specific bar directly. Getting from here to Walking Street is a short ride rather than a walk for most people. And because Walking Street is pedestrian at night, you will be dropped at one end of it either way.

One factual note so nobody is surprised: this zone contains adult-entertainment venues alongside ordinary bars, concentrated in parts of LK Metro and dotted along the spine. It is visible and it is signed, and you can walk past it as easily as into it. That is the entire extent of what this site has to say about it — the pages here are about bars, music and streets.

Who this zone is for. Anyone staying more than a few days. Anyone who wants to hear the person opposite them. Small groups. Couples, in the bar-and-food sense. Returning visitors who already did the strip. Anyone watching what they spend, because the drinking economics here are simply better than on the seafront and nobody is charging for spectacle. And anyone who wants a night that starts before ten.

Who it is not for. A first-time visitor with one night, who should see Walking Street because it is the thing Pattaya is famous for. Anyone who came to be on a dance floor with a serious sound system. Big groups wanting a table, a booth and bottle service — that is a Climax or 808 conversation, and the mechanics are on the table service page. Anyone who wants glamour; this zone does not do glamour and is not trying to.

The honest trade-off. You get better value, a better crowd, earlier hours and an actual conversation. You give up production, spectacle and scale. The bars are small, the sound systems are ordinary, the decor is whatever it is, and you will not walk out with a photo that impresses anybody. What you get instead is the version of Pattaya that people who live here choose on their own night off — which is, in the end, the more reliable signal.

Best way to try it: a Sunday. Come in the late afternoon, eat on the street, and end up at Maju. If the zone is going to click for you, it will click on a Sunday.
