WHAT IS MAJU?

Maju Bar & Guesthouse is a two-story neon-lit bar on Soi Buakhao with a guesthouse attached above. Local + international beers, specialty cocktails, hookah, free pool table, leather lounge area. The kind of room that runs from beer-and-vibes early to full party energy by midnight.

It's also a stay-spot — guesthouse rooms upstairs make it the "crash where you party" kind of venue you don't get from a regular nightclub.

WHERE MR. WE OUTSIDE COMES IN

Mr. We Outside hosts Sunday Funday Night at Maju. The series ran 48,337 views on YouTube via the Maju Bar Thailand channel — his single most-viewed venue feature to date. The plug delivers the room.

Sundays at Maju is the residency night. Hosted, MC'd, the gang brings the crowd, the bar brings the bottles. Different energy than a Walking Street club — more intimate, more bar-fight-energy, more "stay till morning."

THE TWO FLOORS.

The difference between this and a Walking Street club is structural, not a question of size. There is no pit in front of a booth here. There is a bar you can stand at and be heard, seating you can hold for four hours, and a room that keeps working when the music is not the loudest thing in it.

Ground floor. Bar, pool table, and the traffic in and out from the street. Neon does the lighting rather than a rig, so the room reads open and bright instead of dark and directed.

Upstairs. The lounge end of it — leather seating and hookah. Where a group goes to sit and talk without leaving the venue.

Above that, the guesthouse. That one fact changes the shape of a night more than anything else on this page: some of the room has no journey home.

WHAT THE LAYOUT ACTUALLY BUYS YOU.

A club sells a floor and a sound system. A bar sells somewhere to be for the evening. On the strip the room is designed to move you toward the dance floor; here it is designed to let you settle.

The practical consequences are the reason people choose it. You can hold a conversation without going outside. You can arrive early without waiting for the room to justify itself. You can step out to eat and come back to the same seats. None of those are true in a club.

It also fails at some things. There is no big-room production, no terrace over a famous street, and no late licence culture. If those are the night you want, this is the wrong doorway and the honest answer is further down this page.

WHAT A BAR PLAYS.

A bar programmes to the room in front of it rather than to a timetable. Early, music sits under the conversation at a volume that lets the bar work. Later it climbs until the room is unmistakably a party. That curve is the music policy of a place like this, and the room in it sets the pace.

So do not expect a genre grid. Anything publishing set times for a neighbourhood bar has confused it with a club. What is worth checking is the calendar rather than the schedule — see events for what is actually booked.

SUNDAY VERSUS THE REST OF THE WEEK.

Most of the week Maju is a bar you drop into. On Sunday it is a night you plan. Same room, different product, and the difference is that Sunday is hosted: an opening, moments that get called rather than stumbled into, and a deliberate lift instead of a slow drift.

Sunday means more here than it does at home. A tourist city does not run a Monday-to-Friday week. Arrivals land on every day of it, so Sunday collects two crowds at once — people still going from the weekend, and residents whose week does not start when yours does. That mix is why a Sunday room can outrun a Friday one. The night-by-night guide maps the rest of the week.

EARLY · GENUINELY USABLE.

This is the main advantage a bar holds over a club. Turning up while it is quiet is not a wasted trip: the pool table is free, the bar has time to talk to you, and you choose the seats you will keep all night. In a club the same hour is dead air.

MID EVENING · IT FILLS UNEVENLY.

A bar on a through-road takes people in ones and twos off the street, not in waves off a queue. The room thickens rather than switching on, so there is no single moment you can be late for.

LATE · THE GAP CLOSES.

By the late stretch the distance between this and a club narrows a long way. On a hosted Sunday it closes fastest, because the room has been pointed at that from the start rather than left to find it.

THE END · TWO EXITS.

Then the room splits. Part of it goes upstairs to bed, part of it goes on into the city’s later rooms — Tunnel and the after-hours guide cover that end. Deciding from here is easier than deciding inside a club, because you are not already three hours deep in a night on the strip.

Two calendar notes that hit a bar as hard as a club. Thailand has licensing hours, and alcohol sales are restricted on some Buddhist holidays and on election days — those dates move year to year and override anything a venue has planned. Mid-April is Songkran, when the whole city changes rhythm for days rather than hours.

DRESS, ID, CONDITION.

Dress. This is not a room where you get turned away over shoes. Smart casual here means dressed for the street rather than for the beach — the outfit that would fail a club door usually passes at a bar. Wet swimwear is still nobody’s welcome guest.

Condition. The one line that exists everywhere. Visibly unsteady is the most common refusal in this city, at every kind of venue, and it is not negotiable at any of them.

ID. Carry physical photo ID. It is asked for less often at a bar than at a club, and it is still the thing that ends the conversation when it is asked.

GROUPS AND WHETHER THERE IS ANYTHING ON THE DOOR.

Groups are easier here than in any other room I work. A bar runs no capacity theatre — eight people walking in is a good night for the bar, not a problem to manage. The only thing worth doing in advance is saying you are coming, so the seating exists when you arrive rather than being assembled around you.

On entry charges. A neighbourhood bar does not usually run a door charge, because it has no production cost to recover the way an event room does. Special nights are where that can change. The question is the same one that works at every venue in this city: is there anything on the door tonight, and does it include a drink. Ask the bar or ask whoever is hosting you — not a directory listing written two years ago.

WHAT A BAR BILL IS MADE OF.

A bar is cheaper than a club on the strip through structure, not generosity. Rent on an inland soi instead of frontage on the most famous street in the city. No lighting rig or guest booking to pay off across the night. No door charge to build a room around. What is left is drinks.

So the bill is the drinks, plus service where a venue adds it, plus tax on top. Ask whether a quoted figure is inclusive before you assume the number you were told is the number you pay. That is worth doing at any venue here, and it is the single most common surprise on a Pattaya bill.

WHEN RESERVED SPACE IS WORTH IT HERE.

Mostly it is not, and that is the point of a bar. Reserved space earns its money in one case: a group large enough that arriving without a plan means standing in the middle of a room holding drinks.

If a group booking does come with a number attached, ask the question you would ask at a club. A fee buys the space and nothing else. A minimum spend is a floor on a bill you then drink your way through, so the value comes back in the glass. At bar prices a minimum is easier to reach than people expect. The saving that is specific to this address is upstairs. A night that ends where you are already staying takes the ride home out of the budget, and out of the risk.

ON THE MIC IN A BAR.

In early, walk the room, find out which groups are coming and where they are sitting, talk to the bar about the shape of the night before it has one.

Hosting a bar is a different job from hosting a club. In a club you work over a sound system and build energy from nothing. Here the room can hear you, so it is closer to running a room than driving one — introductions, moments, keeping a climb going instead of manufacturing one. WHAT A HOSTED SUNDAY CHANGES FOR A GROUP.

Walking cold into a bar is easy. Walking cold into a bar and knowing nobody is a quiet night, and that is the actual failure mode people book against.

Hosted means the seating exists, the staff know you are coming, and you get introduced to the room instead of standing at the edge of it. It also means someone in the building can tell you whether tonight is worth extending somewhere else, and where.

SKIP IT IF.

You want a proper club floor. Two levels, a pit and international DJs is 808 on Walking Street, and Wednesday is the night I host it.

You want to be out until sunrise. That is an after-hours room, not a bar — Tunnel, which opens at 1AM.

You want daylight, a pool or a production night. Climax on Soi 2 runs pool parties and weekend takeovers.

You want the spectacle of the strip. Soi Buakhao is a working road, not a show. Start with the Walking Street guide instead.

GETTING THERE AND GETTING HOME.

Soi Buakhao runs inland between the main roads and stays open to traffic, so unlike Walking Street a vehicle can put you down close to the door. Baht buses run the main road loop and you walk in from either end; ride-hailing can reach the soi itself.

One thing to know before you pick a doorway at random: Soi Buakhao mixes ordinary drinking bars with venues that are part of Pattaya’s adult trade, and they sit side by side along the same road. Maju is the first kind. The Soi Buakhao guide covers how the street is laid out.

Getting home is the easy part of this page. A ride can reach you, and if you are staying upstairs there is no ride at all.
